Do you know how to open your Tesla's doors if the vehicle completely loses power?

🚙 Model Y (2020–2024): Rear Door
On 2020–2024 Model Y vehicles equipped with a rear manual release:
- Remove the mat from the bottom of the rear door pocket.
- Press the red tab and remove the access door.
- Pull the mechanical release cable toward the front of the vehicle.
There is one particularly important detail: Tesla states that not all Model Y vehicles from this generation are equipped with a manual release for the rear doors.
Do not assume that every Model Y has exactly the same configuration. Check your own vehicle before an emergency occurs.
🚙 Model Y (2025+): Rear Door
The procedure is different on newer Model Y vehicles.
- Locate the slot in front of the release cover at the bottom of the rear door pocket.
- Insert a finger into the slot and lift to remove the cover.
- Pull the mechanical release cable toward the front of the vehicle.
If you've upgraded from an earlier Model Y, it's worth checking the new location because the design has changed.
🚘 Model 3 (2024+): Rear Door
The refreshed 2024+ Model 3 also provides a mechanical rear-door release.
To use it:
- Find the slot in front of the release cover at the bottom of the rear door pocket.
- Insert a finger and lift the cover.
- Pull the mechanical release cable toward the front of the vehicle.
The cable is hidden behind the cover, which means a passenger unfamiliar with the vehicle may not know it exists.
⚠️ What About Model 3 (2017–2023)?
This generation deserves particular attention.
Tesla's current Japan-market owner's manual for the 2017–2023 Model 3 does not provide the same rear-door manual-release procedure shown in the 2024+ Model 3 manual.
Owners of these vehicles should therefore check their specific vehicle configuration and make sure passengers understand alternative emergency exit routes.
This is particularly important if children or other family members regularly sit in the rear seats.
💡 Don't Wait Until an Emergency to Find It
Knowing that a manual release exists is only the first step.
Before you actually need it, check:
• Where the release is located
• Which cover needs to be removed
• Whether your particular vehicle has a rear release
• Whether your family members know how to find it
Rear-door release designs vary by model and production year, so checking your own vehicle is more useful than simply memorizing a generic Tesla procedure.

The manual release is intended for situations in which the vehicle has no power or manual operation is otherwise necessary.
Tesla warns that when a door is opened manually without power, the window does not automatically lower as it normally would. As a result, the window or vehicle trim could be damaged.
The manual door release should also never be used while the vehicle is moving.
For normal operation, use the electronic button at the top of the interior door handle.
